General Information

What is the First-Year Odyssey Seminar requirement?

All first-year undergraduate students who matriculate fall semester 2011 and thereafter must successfully complete one First-Year Odyssey Seminar by the end of the first year in residence. This policy excludes transfer students.

Who will teach the seminars?

Faculty from across campus will teach the seminars.

How many students will be in a seminar?

The seminars will be limited to fifteen to eighteen students.

Which schools and colleges will have faculty teaching the seminars?

Every school on campus has faculty teaching FYO seminars.

Do all seminars meet for one hour a week for fifteen weeks?

No, some faculty will teach on a different schedule. For example, a seminar may meet for a 2-hour class period once a week for half a semester or for a 1-hour class period twice a week for half a semester to accommodate the seminar content.

Grading

How will the First-Year Odyssey Seminar be graded?

The First-Year Odyssey Seminar will have A-F grading.

What is considered to be a passing grade?

A grade of D is considered passing for all UGA courses. This is true for the seminars also.

Scheduling and Athena

How will we ensure that students in the later orientation sessions will have access to a desired seminar?

Seats in seminars will be made available gradually throughout the summer.

Student Registration

Will any students other than first-year students be allowed to register for a seminar?

No.

May students take more than one First-Year Odyssey Seminar in their first year?

No. We want to ensure that there are enough seats for every first-year student.

Will students be able to register for a particular seminar, or will they have to indicate an interest in more than one and then be assigned to one by the faculty director?

Students will register for one seminar at the time of registration.

Transfer Students

How will this requirement impact transfer students?

This requirement is for incoming first-year students and will not apply to transfer students.

Honors, Audits, Withdrawals

Is there an Honors version of the seminar?

No, there are other seminars for honors students, but honors students will take an FYO seminar in addition to honors seminars.

Will students be allowed to audit a seminar?

No.

Will students be able to withdraw from the seminar just like any other course?

Yes.

Will the Honors Program accept the FYO seminars as part of the requirements for applying to Honors after the first semester?

Yes. Students are eligible to apply for the Honors Program as long as they have 15 hours (14 of which are graded A-F) and their cumulative University of Georgia GPA is at least a 3.75. Since FYOS 1001 is graded A-F, it counts.
